A homemade healthy kids snack within 2 minutes using 3 ingredients.
Do you make your own popcorn from scratch using popping corn, a pot, and some oil, or do you get the microwave popcorn that comes in the sealed bags? Here’s a great way to make your own homemade microwave popcorn and it takes 2 minutes. The great thing about this method is you can control the amount of salt and butter you add making it a healthier option over many pre-prepared brands.
How homemade microwave popcorn was invented… in our house
We started using this method after my daughter suggested we try microwaving some popcorn in a paper lunch bag. I was nervous about the idea, something about microwave ovens and putting strange things into it unsettle me. I think it was the thought of a horrific science experiment that crossed my mind but I agreed to try.
So we grabbed a paper bag, added a 1/3 cup of the popping corn, 1/2 teaspoon of butter and a sprinkle of salt….. into the microwave.
The first attempt…. to my surprise, it wasn’t a disaster!!! We started cooking it for 1 minute but that wasn’t enough for all the corn to pop, so we went with a 1:30 minutes instead!

Well what do you know, it worked! The microwave didn’t explode and there were no 911 calls needed! Better still it tasted great. If you kids like popcorn too, give this recipe below a try. It works just like the bought microwavable popcorn only it tastes better! (in my opinion).

Now on the kids often use this method, it’s quick and there are no messy pots to clean! Kids can easily get involved and make their own which I’m a big advocate for. This microwave popcorn is also a great healthy snack and it’s perfect to add to the kids’ school lunch box, whats not to love.
The end result, delicious homemade microwave popcorn.
If you’ve got any good kids snacks you’d like to share or popcorn recipes we’d love to hear about them.
